Conserving Energy and Protecting the Environment

It has only been in the past fifty years or so that these principles have really caught on. Before the oil crisis in 1973, and the creation of the EPA in 1970 few of us stopped to think much about these sorts of things, but the auto salvage industry has been saving energy, and protecting our environment since the 1920s.

What? you might say. Junkyards protecting the environment?

Yes. Junkyards.

Consider what it takes to manufacture the single most common material component in most cars, steel. It takes about 23,000,000 (that's 23 MILLION) BTUs of energy to manufacture one ton of steel. Still more energy is needed to turn that steel into usable parts. That's A LOT of natural gas, oil, and/or coal. That's A LOT of pollution too.

Now compare this to a used part solution. With little more than a set of wrenches, a mechanic can produce the same part off a salvaged automobile. Energy used/pollution created? Not much.

But it's USED, you might say.

Yes, it is used, just like every other part on your car.

Every year tens of thousands of cars and trucks meet an untimely end on our roads. Most end up at an auto salvage yard like Toll Gate Auto Parts. There they are processed. The parts that are still good are removed. Metals such as steel, aluminum and copper are recycled. Even things like motor oil, antifreeze, and freon are collected and recycled. When the process is complete, the salvage yard has saved thousands of pounds metals, properly disposed of gallons of environmentally harmful oils and chemicals, and reduced the need to use additional resources and energy to manufacture dozens of new replacement parts.

And that's for every single salvaged car or truck.

So the next time you need a part for your automobile, save yourself some money while you help save your environment. Choose used.
